2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz WiFi, what are the differences?
- The advantages of a 5GHz connection are: No interference from other Network devices; Less crowded WiFi when you have other neighbors with WiFi.
- The disadvantage of a 5GHz WiFi are: Less coverage/reach compare to 2.4GHz; Not every wireless device supports 5GHz.
Almost people’s homes should have a wifi router. By default, almost all home WiFi routers are set to 2.4GHz. In most cases, this is the ideal solution, but in more cases, a 5GHz connection is much better.
However, when to use 5GHz? when you have a lot of neighbors with WiFi, which causes interference. If you want to stream HD video files or want to limit the wifi coverage. Then when to use 2.4GHz? If you care more about wifi coverage and want to have a connection over a large distance (for a big house), you can do this, or when you can’t have both 5GHz and 2.4GHz (if your router only supports one type of connection then it might be best to choose 2.4GHz), but experiment and find out for yourself.
In order to decide which connection to choose, you can scan the location for WiFi interferences. For this, you can use an App called “WiFi Analyzer”. This will show you how crowded 2.4GHz and 5GHz are.
To change the connection type (band) to 5GHz we need to access the router settings. The following method gets you to the login page of your router, but from there you will need to follow your specific router manual, because every router is different. If you find out that your router has the default login, then it is time to change this ASAP! Otherwise, your Network is open to anyone.
On your PC, hit Start, type “cmd” and open the command prompt.
Here type “ipconfig” and press “enter”.
Scroll up to the top of cmd you will see.
Under “local-area connection” you’ll find “default gateway“. Write down the IP address next to it.
Now open your Internet browser and navigate to that IP address (default gateway). You’ll be asked to enter your login. This you must find out through the manual and as mentioned if it’s the default login then you should change this app (for security).
After accessing your router configuration page, you must find the wireless settings. Depending on your type of router, you could have access to “Multiple SSID’S“. If this is the case then create an SSID for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz. This way you will have a choice depending on the type of device you want to connect to your wifi.
Here I do also want to recommend one useful wireless smart device, it called Wireless USB Adapter, it can strengthen your devices’ wifi connecting, cheap but with good function. For me it is good, I have used it on my computer while working, no bad, you guys could have a try.
